Safeway Logistics is a top-rated provider of specialized transportation services. We’ve won a number of UniGroup awards, including recognition for Performance and Safety, thanks in part to our quality drivers. “Our drivers are the face of our Company,” says recruiter Heidi Hemmelgarn. “We are consistently looking for experienced tractor trailer drivers that not only want to make a good living but also want to represent our company.”

We look for drivers with a Class A commercial license, a valid medical certificate, and a minimum of two years OTR (over-the-road) experience who are interested in joining our team of specialized transport professionals.

For close to 50 years, the Safeway name has been synonymous with quality service and our drivers have always been an integral part of that. From their safe-driving histories to their ability to interact with clients and their staff to manage the details and trajectory of each job, our drivers are a huge part of our brand. When a Safeway driver arrives on site, you’ll know them immediately by their Safeway-branded shirt and their friendly smile.

The Safeway orientation program helps new drivers establish a firm base of customer service skills and introduces them to our list of specialty services (including White Glove, Special Product and Flatbed services). We also provide opportunities for all of our drivers to expand their skill set through UniGroup University, which offers a range of safety, logistics and operations courses such as Packing Best Practices, Move Management and Defensive Driving.

Becoming a Safeway driver means becoming part of a family. Just ask Robert Edgar, an experienced Dry Van tractor-trailer driver and fairly recent hire — he’s only been with the company for a year. “Safeway is the only company I’ve worked for that truly believes in family first,” he says. “They don’t treat me like I’m just a number.”

Our drivers are definitely more than just numbers. In addition to an excellent benefits package, they can earn a pay-per-mile increase after a 90-day performance review. And, we offer a $500 referral bonus to reward our drivers for helping to fill our ranks.

To help keep our drivers safe, we put our tractors and trailers through a comprehensive maintenance review every 6 months — that’s twice the legal requirement — to minimize the risk of mechanical issues that might cause problems or accidents during transport.

We know that long hours on the road can be tough, so we created an OTR drivers’ lounge at our Indianapolis Headquarters. It features an entertainment room, full bathroom, shower and free laundry facilities, so drivers can clean up and relax during downtime. For those in need of a more spiritual form of replenishment, Safeway’s relationship with the Association of Christian Truckers’ ministry opens up a number of options, including Education, Ordination, Church Services and Bible Study.

Do you know any experienced drivers interested in employment with one of the most respected fleets on the road today? If so, be sure to share Robert’s advice with them: Consider coming to Safeway because Safeway is focused on helping everyone in the company to be successful.”
